The French multinational vehicle manufacturer Renault under it's Zero Emissions Program has produced an electric city car "Twizy".
The Twizy was released for sales in France, UK and several other European countries in March 2012
Twizy is technically a two seated quadricycle with the rear electric engine and a rear wheel drive having a maximum range of 100 km.
Technical Specification
The Twizy is an ultra compact vehicle with a length of 8 ft (2.23 m) width 4 ft ( 1.19 m) and height 5 ft (1.46 m), weights around 450 kg. The vehicle is powered by a set of Lithium-ion batteries feeding an electric motor (13 KW), which produces 17 bhp ( brake horse power), connected with a reduction gear to the rear wheels. The vehicle is designed specifically for the city use, top speed is limited to around 80 km/h ( 50 mph).
It can travel around 100 km after a 3.5 hour charge from a 220 V power source. The battery is located underneath the front seat which can be charged with an extended spiral cable stored beneath a flap at the front of the vehicle. The integrated charging system is compatible with roadside battery charging as well as the standard ( 220 V 10 A ) household electrical supply. It has solid disc brakes with KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) commonly known as regenerative brakes and the steering system is direct rack steering.
Models
Two model of Twizy are available;
- Twizy Urban 45 model has a electric motor power of 4 kW( 5 hp) and a maximum speed of 45 km/h ( 28 mph). It is priced at €6,990 in Europe.
- Twizy Urban 80 model has 13 kW ( 17 hp) electric motor and attain a top speed of 80 km/h ( 50 mph) , cost at €7,690.
Due to it's compact design the car has some drawbacks that is the storage space is limited and extremely low room for rear seat compartment.
Expected to be release in India in mid of 2014 and will cost around Rs 4 to 5 lakhs.
